Friday May 2, 7PM @ Red Emma's : Nowtopia!

Outlaw bicycling, urban permaculture, biofuels, free software, and even the Burning Man festival are windows into a scarcely visible social transformation that is redefining politics as we know it. As capitalism continues to corral every square inch of the globe into its logic of money and markets, new practices are emerging through which people are taking back their time and technological know-how. In small, under-the-radar ways, they are making life better right now, simultaneously building the foundation-technically and socially-for a genuine movement of liberation from market life.  Join us on May 2 for a discussion on the rebirth of the American working class with Chris Carlsson, author of NOWTOPIA, a new spring release from our pals at AK PRESS!

Monday May 12, 7PM @ Red Emma's : Kristian Williams presents American Methods

In the US a police officer is more likely to kill a civilian than be killed by one. Between 1996 and 2005, 575 officers were killed in the line of duty—an average of 64 deaths per year. Yet in a recent joint investigation, ColorLines and The Chicago Reporter found that approximately “9,500 people nationally were killed by police during the years 1980 to 2005.” That’s 380 civilian deaths per year, roughly six times the amount of police fatalities. The Bureau of Justice reports a steady decline in police fatalities since the early 1970s. The same cannot be said about the rate of deadly police force, whether deemed “justified” or “wrongful” by police standards, against civilians.  Don't miss this special presentation by author Kristian Williams of his latest book American Methods: Torture and the Logic of Domination!

Thursday May 22, 7PM @ 2640 : Utilities: Private Profit or Public Good?

More and more people across the Americas are facing huge increases in the cost of utilities-electricity, gas, oil, water-often forcing them into the painful choices of poverty: Should I pay for food, or heat, or the kids' ne shoes, or the light bill?
At the same time, more utilities in the Americas are moving from public to private control, passing along large profits to their shareholders. Should utilities be private, or are they a public good? How can ordinary people have a say in how these life necessities are provided, and at what cost? Our speakers will address these questions, as they talk about utility consumer movements in Maryland and Nicaragua-examples of activities across the Americas which are working to improve the lives of us all.
Light Refreshments will be served. Sponsored by Casa Baltimore/Limay, a friendship-city project linking the peoples of Maryland and San Juan de Limay, Nicaragua. For more information, call 410-662-6292.

Following the occupation of city hall plaza earlier this month, the P2P Youth Enterprises Coalition is taking its fight for funding for peer-to-peer tutoring programs in Baltimore city to the next level, with a hunger strike starting on May 30th.  The coalition (made up of groups like the Baltimore Algebra Project, Wide Angle Youth Media, and Kids on the Hill) is pretty amazing and very much youth-led - but they're throwing this action together very quickly and need all the support they can get.  Come to the ceremony on Tuesday to show your support for the kids who will be hunger striking, and find out how you can help with the campaign.  Click through for more info on the schedule of rallies and marches during the hunger strike...

Friday May 30, 7PM @ 2640 : Dark Cabinet of the Strange Weird!

GHOST STORIES! GHOST MUSIC! A RADIO SHOW WITHOUT THE RADIO!

Ric Royer and G Lucas Crane take the art of the ghost story to new dimensions and extremes as they mix Royer’s surreal tales of the darkly humorous macabre with the intensely terrifying soundscapes of Crane (a.k.a., Nonhorse).

In the spirit of such sinister delights as old-time horror radio shows, Tales from the Crypt, and Grand Guignol, Dark Cabinet will bite your nails for you, it will be ridiculous, it will at least be different we promise you that much, a carnal carnival for the soul and senses, an uncanny combination of fear, death and fun.

Tonight’s episode features stories and songs from their recently released self-titled LP from EHSE records and features musical guests Sejayno and Toshi Makihara, and the premier of  new films by Erin Womack and Evan Devine. Plus unexpected mystery guest appearances by Tom Boram and Dan Breen!

Costumes encouraged. $5 gets you in the door.$13 gets you in the door AND out the door with the new Dark Cabinet LP and CD.
