Saturday Aug 16, 8PM @ 2640 : FLIGHT:the mythic journey of a person displaced

Flight is a brand new 30-minute shadow theater piece from radical graphic artist and Just Seeds collective member Erik Ruin, depicting the picaresque journey of a displaced person attempting to escape/ transcend persecution. This show will feature overhead projectors, scrolling landscapes, intricately cut scenes of shipwrecks, refugee camps & burning houses, and a hair-raisingly beautiful improvised score by violinist Katt Hernandez

Also on the bill for the evening is a special treat: "Interference," a puppet show about a stranger in a strange land, a newcomer to the city who finds the experience of living within its confines overwhelming, in a most peculiar way.  robot neutron (aka roby newton) uses hand puppets and shadows to tell this tale of "interference".  she lives here in baltimore and has been making puppets and puppet shows since before the turn of the century.

Plus special musical guests tba. $5-$10 sliding scale.

Monday Aug 18, 7PM @ 2640 : PEPTalk #4: The RHIZOME COLLECTIVE presents Toolbox for Sustainable City Living: A do-it-ourselves Guide

The Rhizome Collective has for years been at the forefront of innovative low cost (or no cost) solutions to sustainable living, diy food security, and grassroots environmental remediation.  Their Austin base of operations isn't just a shining example of how to reinvent our relationships to our urban environment, but a full-blown anarchoscience research facility for pushing the envelop of ecological practice, one five gallon bucket at a time.  We're exceptionally happy, therefore, that two members of the collective, Stacy Pettigrew and Scott Kellogg, have gone ahead and synthesized these years of experience and experimentation into a book for the rest of: Toolbox for Sustainable City Living: A Do-it-Ourselves Guide.  And even better - Scott Kellog will be coming to Baltimore to present the book, with an evening talk and demonstration session as part of Red Emma's and 2640's PEPTalk series.

There's also going to be an in-depth, hands-on, get some dirt under your nails workshop starting at noon on the same day, where you'll get the chance to help deploy some of the extremely appropriate technology at the lovely Forrest St. Garden (between Biddle and Chase).

Friday Aug 22, 7PM @ 2640 : Utah Phillips memorial concert

One of this country's great political folk musicians has left the stage. Utah Phillips gave us a legacy of songs and stories, for us to sing, tell and learn from. Join us to continue this folk tradition and honor the memory and work of Utah Philips. Performers include Ryan Harvey Emma's Revolution , R.A.M., Sine JensenTom Frampton  and more.  Admission is $5. All proceeds benefit the  Baltimore chapter of the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) and the Ft. Meade chapter of the Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW) .

Saturday Aug 23, 3PM @ 2640 : Red Emma's Benefit with the Rude Mechanical Orchestra

Come to 2640 for an afternoon show with the fantastic 30-plus member NYC radical marching band, the Rude Mechanical Orchestra!  On their way to bringing the tuba-fueled street madness to the counter-Republican National Convention protests, the Rude Mechanical Orchestra is swinging through Baltimore in a veggie-fueled bus, and we're extremely excited to be hosting them at 2640, along with Baltimore's own Barrage Band Orchestra and Spoke Ensemble!  Show up and support Red Emma's - we need it!
$5-10 sliding scale donation requested.  Hope to see you there!

Tuesday Aug 26, 7PM @ Red Emma's : Here's to Women's Right to Vote!

"Courage in women is often mistaken for insanity"

In honor of Women's Equality Day, established to commemorate the ratification of the 19th Amendment, we will screen a film about the direct action women took to gain the women's right to vote.  This film profiles the courageous strategies and bold tactics initiated by Alice Paul and Lucy Burns and employed by many other women.  Come view an often untold history, of the relentless organizing, protesting, hunger striking, and arrests which resulted in women securing the right to vote.

Friday Aug 29, 7PM @ Red Emma's : Films on Abortion: Coat Hanger Project and Abortion Democracy: Poland /South Africa

Come to a screening of two groundbreaking documentaries about abortion by filmmakers Sarah Diehl and Angie Young.  Berlin-based Diehl's film, "Abortion Democracy: Poland/South Africa," compares and contrasts abortion policy in the two countries and argues for a liberalization of abortion laws. Young's "The Coat Hanger Project " focuses about the current state of the US pro-choice/reproductive justice movement 35 years after Roe v. Wade and specifically targets the post-1973 generation

Saturday Aug 30, 11:30AM @ 2640 : Tearing at the Roots Festival

Tearing at the Roots seeks to understand the interconnected misery of civilization, capitalism, patriarchy, racism, the state and other forms of oppression, we are interested not only in learning about the existence of these repressive regimes but also seeking the destruction of them!

The first day of the festival will be held at 2640 St. Paul Street and will consist of varied speakers, workshops, presentations, discussions, tablers, and more. Current topics include eco-feminism, security culture, rewilding, primitive skillshare.
