Tuesday Mar 2, 7PM @ Red Emma's : David Vine presents "Island of Shame: The Secret History of the U.S. Military Base on Diego Garcia"

This March, we're pleased to welcome American University professor David Vine to present his new book Island of Shame: The Secret History of the U.S. Military Base on Diego Garcia. Island of Shame is the groundbreaking work that dares to expose the other Guantánamo looming at the isolated heart of the Indian Ocean. Although most don’t know it exists, the US military base on the island of Diego Garcia is one of the most strategically important and secretive US military installations in the world, serving as a launch pad for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, a top-secret CIA prison, and a centerpiece for US domination of Middle East oil supplies. But Diego Garcia harbors another dirty secret, one that has been kept from most of the world—until now. Island of Shame is the first major book to reveal the shocking truth of how the United States conspired with Britain to forcibly expel Diego Garcia's indigenous people—the Chagossians—and dump them in impoverished exile.

Thursday Mar 11, 7PM @ Red Emma's : Roubert Koulish presents Immigration and American Democracy

While the idea of immigration embodies America’s rhetorical commitment to democracy, recent immigration control policies also showcase abysmal failures in democratic practice. Immigration and American Democracy examines these failures in terms of state sovereignty, neoliberalism, and surveillance-based techniques of social control.

The ideological argument for privatization is not new. But immigration has provided a laboratory for replicating on American soil the sorts of outsourcing travesties that have occurred in America’s war in Iraq. As an outcome, abusive executive powers—many delegated to state and local governments and private actors—are manifested every day in data collection, spying, detention, and deportation hearings, and in many cases bypassing the Constitution. The practice of privatization extends this leviathan immigration state by clamping down on civil liberties without having to oblige the courts.

Ultimately, Koulish examines the contested terrain between democratic and undemocratic forces in the immigration policy domain and concludes with recommendations for how democratic forces might well still win out.

Friday Mar 19, 7PM @ Red Emma's : Venezuela Speaks ! Voices from the Grassroots

Red Emma's is thrilled to welcome Carlos Martinez, editor of the new PM Press book, Venezuela Speaks!: Voices from the Grassroots! It's a collection of interviews with activists and participants from across Venezuela's social movements, and we've just gotten the book in stock, and are happy to report that it looks phenomenal. From community media to land reform; cooperatives to communal councils, from the labor movement to the Afro-Venezuelan network, Venezuela Speaks! sheds light on the complex realities within the Bolivarian Revolution. These interviews offer a compelling oral history of Venezuela's democratic revolution, from the bottom up. Don't miss it!

"Michael Fox, Carlos Martinez, and JoJo Farrell cut through the mist that usually surrounds discussions of Venezuela to enter a world of impressive political and cultural diversity. Venezuela Speaks! is a geography of struggle, a sociology of passion, and an ethnography of hope, of the unrelenting insistence that people have a right to control their own lives, and that in doing so, a better world will be made." --Greg Grandin, author of Empire's Workshop: Latin America, the United States, and the Rise of the New Imperialism.

Thursday Mar 25, 7PM @ Red Emma's : Leah B Presents "----- and Her Brain": The Experiences of a Young, Trans Woman

Join Leah as she presents her home-spun booklet is entitled "------- and Her Brain ". Generally, it describes her experience living as an ever evolving transsexual young woman.  Her years of suppression and anguish, leading to her inevitable coming out process, are all depicted through numerous free-verse poetry/prose pieces, rapid sketches, and disposable camera photography. The readings are rather emotionally charged and may (at times) be accompanied by pre-recorded, barely audible, background music created in her basement in the late hours of the night. This booklet is the first installment of a multi-leveled project which will eventually produce a full length album that will hopefully be completed sometime during the summer.  In addition to the spoken presentation, Leah will be discussing her initiative in starting a regional collective called Gender Edge. The purpose of the collective is to display to general society the strength, empowerment, and creativity brought forth by the younger, edgier transgender generations. It is basically an activism through art dynamic, a punk inspired movement for the transgender community.

Monday Mar 29, 7PM @ 2640 : AUTUMN GEM: A Documentary on China's First Feminist

With all my heart I beseech and beg
my two hundred million female compatriots
to assume their responsibility as citizens.
Arise! Arise! Chinese women, arise!
- Qiu Jin
AUTUMN GEM explores the extraordinary life of China's first feminist Qiu Jin (1875-1907).  An accomplished writer, women's rights activist, and leader of a revolutionary army, Qiu Jin boldly challenged traditional gender roles and demanded equal rights and opportunities for women.  THe sword-wielding, cross-dressing Qiu Jin spoke out against footbinding and other oppressive practices, published her own feminist journal, and attempted an armed uprising against the corrupt Qing government.  Compared to a "Chinese Joan of Arc," she emerged as a national heroine who redefined what it meant to be a woman in early 20th-century China.
Join us for a screening and Q-and-A session with filmmakers Rae Chang and Adam Tow.  $5 - 10 sliding scale donation requested.
