In girum imus nocte et consumimur igni [We turn in the night, consumed by fire] (1978), 105 minutes
"I will make no concessions to the public in this film. I believe there are several good reasons for this decision, and I am going to state them.
In the first place, it is well known that I have never made any concessions to the dominant ideas or ruling powers of my era.
Moreover, nothing of importance has ever been communicated by being gentle with a public..."

Friday Apr 9, 7PM @ Red Emma's : Kari Lydersen // Revolt On Goose Island: The Chicago Factory Takeover and What it Means in the Economic Crisis
Finally rescheduled!
December 5, 2008: It wasn’t supposed to work like this. Days after getting a $45 billion bailout from the U.S. government, Bank of America shut down a line of credit that kept Chicago’s Republic Windows & Doors factory operating. The bosses, who knew what was coming, had been sneaking machinery out in the middle of the night. They closed the factory and sent the workers home. Then something surprising happened: Republic’s workers occupied the factory and refused to leave.
Kari Lydersen, an award-winning former Washington Post reporter, tells the story of the factory takeover, elegantly transforming the workers’ story into a parable of labor activism for the 21st century, one that concludes with a surprising and little-reported victory. Join author and journalist Kari Lydersen as she discusses this important book.
Saturday Apr 10, 7PM @ Red Emma's : We Are an Image from the Future: The Greek Revolts of 2008
In December of 2008, the city of Athens exploded as ordinary men and women took to the streets in one of the most exciting insurrections the past decade has seen. Reacting to the police murder of 15-year-old Alexis Grigoropoulos, masses of people swarmed the structures of power, demanding an end to brutality, to capital's power, to business as usual. This is your chance to hear the story of the Greek Insurrection of 2008 from those who were there.
In collaboration with our friends at AK Press, Red Emma's is thrilled to announce a book release celebration and a night of discussion with two of the editors of We are an Image from the Future: The Greek Revolt of 2008, a new volume that delves into the December insurrection and its aftermath through interviews with those who witnessed and participated in it, alongside the communiqués and texts that circulated through the networks of revolt. Get on the ground facts about what really happened from our Greek comrades, who are travelling across the US to promote the book and build alliances with anarchists and activists all across the country. Hear not just about the intensity of the riots, but the stories of organizing and solidarity, the questions of strategy and tactics, the details about the real fabric of the Greek left that made December possible.
You won't get this oppotunity again - don't miss it!

Friday Apr 16, 7PM @ Red Emma's : Charlotte O'Neal visits the US to talk about "A Panther in Africa"!
We've screened the great documentary "A Panther in Africa" years ago -- it's the story of Pete and Charlotte O'Neal, who fled the US in 1969, after Pete was arrested due to his work as chairman of the Kansas City Chapter of the Black Panther Party, for Tanzania, where they established the United African Alliance Community Center, still in operation today. As an exiled fugitive, unless the US gets its act together and establishes amnesty for political prisoners and victims of COINTELPRO, Pete's not able to come to the United States, but his wife Charlotte, herself an equally amazing activist and organizer (as well as an artist and musician!), will be touring the US this spring, and we're happy to welcome her to Red Emma's for a screening and discussion of "A Panther in Africa", which documents the O'Neals life and work in exile. More info on the tour and the UAACC here.

El Monstruo is a collection of stories written from below in defense of history and place. Join us with author John Ross as he discusses his work for what will surely be an enthralling evening!
